Copper-based intrinsic defect fluorides (CDFs), as a material application for upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs), have been proposed and demonstrated. However, little work has focused on the UCNPs’ transport in the presence of CDFs. In this study, (NaGdF4:Yb/Er)3(Al,Ga)5O12 UCNPs were synthesized and dispersed in the presence of Cu-based CDFs. The interactions between UCNPs and CDFs were investigated using the fluorescence intensity decay, fluorescence lifetime and time-resolved two-photon luminescence techniques. In the examined composition range, the addition of Cu-based CDFs leads to the formation of large aggregates, which are more hydrophobic than the pristine UCNPs. Both UCNPs and CDFs exhibit fast fluorescence lifetime decays, and the Yb3+ ions interact with the Na, Ga, and Al sites in the host lattice. The strong optical cross-relaxation between the two species is responsible for the non-monotonic dependence of the lifetime on the doping concentration, which is evident from the temperature-dependent spectra. Moreover, the presence of the Cu-based CDFs accelerates the anisotropy decay, and the effect is not only concentration-dependent but also depends on the temperature. In the meantime, the influence of Cu-based CDFs on the upconverted emission properties is reflected by the spectral contrast of the first order transverse intensity under a polarizer, which is enhanced with the concentration of the CDFs.
