The Sphinx is the Sun in the form of a man. The Sun in the form of a man represents Man in the most exalted sense of the term, and is the Sun in the most exalted sense of the term. To know a thing truly is to see or know a thing in the highest sense of the term, as the Doctrine of Thelema makes very plain; knowing a thing truly requires the proper use of the senses for seeing and hearing. The Sun in the form of a man is the highest knowledge, the highest seeing. Man in the Sphinx is the highest expression of that knowledge; therefore the Sun in the form of a Man is a symbol of the highest thing that a man can know. In the Great Work in the Rite of the Sphinx we must obtain knowledge of the Holy Guardian Angel; the Sphinx in the Sacred Form is an image to help the Magician in that quest. The highest knowledge is an essential part of the Great Work, because it is the act of making the Sun in the form of a man, the Great Magician. The Sun in the form of a man signifies that the Magician will make this greatest act of any man on earth, which is to unite the Sun and the Moon.
When we use the Solar sense of sight in the Rite of the Sphinx we obtain the highest knowledge, the highest seeing. What we see when we use this sense is truth, which the Magus or the True Magician cannot be deceived by. We seek the Truth in our Magick. What we see when we use this sense is the Truth which is projected out of this Truth and is reflected to the Magician as it is projected out of the Sun. By seeing the Truth that is projected out of the Sun we obtain the highest knowledge, the highest seeing. Truth is the Sun in the form of a man. Truth is the Knowledge of the Holy Guardian Angel. To obtain the knowledge of the Holy Guardian Angel it is necessary to see it, and to see it we must use our Solar sense of sight. While we are used to seeing the Sun, the Solar sense is our sense of sight, and we see many things; the Sun itself is our own self. When we use the Solar sense of sight we find our True Self, and thereby we achieve the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel.
the book of the ritual of the great work consists of the ritual of the great work, the ritual of the activation of the great work, the ritual of the inception of the great work, and the ritual of the inception of the great work.
the first law of the sphinx is that of balance. the sphinx is a perfect balance of the sun and moon, and if the magician does not bring them into balance he cannot be the true self. in order to be the true self or to realize ones true will, the magician must apply the divine forces of the sun and moon. as the sun gives life to all things, he must be balanced by the moon, which is the source of all spiritual and mental illumination. to be the true self, the magician must balance the sun and moon, not by bringing their opposing forces into balance, but by bringing their united forces into balance. this union of the sun and moon is the first law of the sphinx.
in the ritual of the sphinx we begin by activating the four elements of nature (earth, water, air, and fire) and then we activate the four powers of the sphinx (know, dare, will, and keep silent). the four elements of nature correspond to the four aspects of our true self which are the four elements of physical nature (earth, water, air, fire). the four powers of the sphinx correspond to the four aspects of our true will (know, dare, will, and keep silent). the four powers of the sphinx correspond to the four elements of physical nature. the first power of the sphinx is called to know. to know is the power to know the limits of one’s true will. this is to know the nature of one’s true self. as the sun is the source of life and light, so is the power of our true self to know the nature of our true will. it is to know the limits of ones true will as to what one is willing to accomplish. it is the power to know the limits of ones true will and then to act upon the knowledge in the service of one’s true will. we cannot do our true will if we do not know our true will. the power of the sun to know the nature of our true will is the power to know the true self.
